So if there is discipline, and you need to be taught to follow it, one method is punishment (another is just to gently remind one of the rule and go on with no punishment, but your original example was a spanking so not consistent there). But if there is a penalty of any kind and/or pain, then it is punishment- which is part of discipline- the teaching. So are you ready for your punishment, little girl, or you eat those peas? Our prison system is design to be a punishment for not being disciplined (ie following the "rules" of the society has set for it's citizens). Loss of freedom, poor living conditions, having a rommate named Bubba, etc. It tries to impose discipline for those that the normal self imposed discipline does not work.
