I was one of the people in the fo who had this. My initial thought and I still kind of think it was that people like myself who have old, free accounts are vulnerable because the system never locks your password after wrong answers. The system resets after wrong tries but it doesn't permanently block the account so a person or more likely a computer program can just start over and give it another tries. barely exists as a company any more and their e-mail system has poor security and service. However I've thought of another possibility and thought I would throw it out there. A few years ago a woman I know as a business contact lost her job and sent out a mass e-mail to a social networking site asking other people to connect to her on it. I felt kind of sorry for her and accepted the request to keep in touch. However it turned out to be a site that harvests e-mail contacts and puts unauthorized charges on credit cards. This was run for quite some time and it wasn't immediately apparent that it wasn't a regular social networking site like Linked-in and other legitimate sites. It's and the same people have run other similar sites. It's a blatant so in addition to using the e-mail contacts or passwords to spam for their own site I could certainly them selling the information or access to other hackers and scammers.
