Well, they sell the 7 years in grad school to us as the apprenticeship, so it is a bit (okay, a LOT) on the skeevy side that now that's been extended by another 7+ years into adjuncting. Adjunct salary = roughly of VAP salary, which in turn = regular prof salary. The crappiest paid adjuncts working full time(!) might make 12k in a year and the more handsomely paid tenured profs might make k or even more at the schools .BIG DIFF. It sounds like your friend was also lucky. adjuncts can only pick up one class at any given institution and end up shuttling between 3-4 different schools. In those situations, they aren't full time anywhere so they don't get perks like housing or even the most basic benefits like healthcare. And if they're too busy trying to teach all those classes to do research, then they'll be lucky if they ever break out of the adjunct machine to a real position. I'm not saying I won't adjunct (which of course is how they keep such a sleaze-machine going chuckleheads like me desperate to stay in the system no matter the cost), but I can't in good conscience say that it's an acceptable system. I they'll overhaul it and more adjuncts get unionized.
