Was raised as such, but no longer associate with that community because I don't agree with how they treat our community. The info I was wanting to gather was meant for my church (which I've been avoiding naming b/c this is an unofficial project) I was trying to find out from others what helped and didn't help them when it came to leaving the Evangelical community and going to a welcoming community. I was remembering the hellish time I had when going to a "- church" for the first time in my life. I never felt so. I was trying to help my pastor to create a safe way for those entering the "- community / welcoming / open and affirming churches" world for the first time. I didn't want to rely on my experiences alone, because everyone experiences things differently. I'm a preacher's kid, and from a line a ministers/missionaries. Coming out was one of the hardest things I've ever done. Going to a "- church" was the second hardest. It really challenged my belief system, and strained my relationship with my parents. At any rate some nice folks at GLAAD have directed me to contact some pro-LGBTQ Evangelical organizations (. Evangelicals Concerned www - ecwr - org). So it seems that I'll go down this path instead, as both groups have contacted me to assist in my main goal: to make coming out as LGBT from the Evangelical world a safer experience. ~S
